Meet Ruth Ward

Senator Ruth Ward is a grandmother, a retired nurse practitioner, a community leader and a conservative consensus builder.

Ruth has lived in Senate District 8 for over 20 years and has lived with her family in Stoddard since 1995.

Ruth legally immigrated to the United States from Sweden in 1959.  She first came to the United States as an exchange student and worked at the Children’s Hospital in Boston as a Med Tech in the cardiac catheterization lab.

A year later, Ruth married her husband and moved to Lincoln, Massachusetts where they raised 3 children: Jim, Kristina, and Celia.

While raising a family Ruth earned a nursing degree and started her career at Newton-Wellesley Hospital.  She went on to earn a B.S. from Fitchburg State College and a M.S. in Nursing from Boston University. As a Nurse Practitioner she focused primarily on diabetes management.

Ruth fell in love with New Hampshire’s mountains and lakes decades before moving here.  As an avid skier and hiker, the peaks of New Hampshire’s White Mountains had become her favorite places to be.  In 1995, she retired from nursing and moved to Stoddard, NH.

Since moving to New Hampshire, Ruth has served her local community as a member of the Stoddard Zoning Board and as Chair and Vice Chair of the Stoddard Planning Board.

Ruth has also served on several statewide boards and commissions including as a Land Steward for the Society for the Protection of NH Forests, the NH Rivers Management Advisory Council, and on the Board of Advisors of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC).

Ruth is also a Master Weaver and is Juried Member of the League of NH Craftsmen and has served as a Trustee of the American Textile History Museum.

In the New Hampshire Senate, Ruth serves as the Vice Chair of the Public and Municipal Affairs Committee, where she works to address local and town issues and create a better working relationship between municipalities and the State of New Hampshire. Ruth also serves on the Committees on Education and Transportation.

Ruth is a proud Republican whose priorities are limiting the size and scope of government, fighting a sales or income tax, and preserving New Hampshire’s beautiful landscape for future generations.
